Phonics

Read write model school

Each year, Ruth Miskin Training and Oxford University Press select Model Schools. In 2018 Sedgefield Hardwick was awarded Read Write Inc. Phonics Model School status. This is in recognition of the outstanding results we achieve in phonics by making sure teaching children to read is at the heart of everything we do. We teach phonics through daily Read Write Inc lessons. Lessons focus on teaching children to decode the sounds they meet in the English language, blend these to form words and then apply these skills to read a variety of interesting books to encourage fluency and comprehension.  Children are also taught to apply these sounds in their spellings and write a wide variety of texts based on the stories and non-fiction books they have read.  Lessons are taught in small groups, where all the children are at the same reading stage.  This ensures that they are able to access texts that meet their individual needs, allowing them to develop as confident and fluent readers.  Assessment is rigorous and effective, allowing us to provide one-to-one tutoring and ensure that no child is left behind.  Therefore, your child is thoroughly supported on their learning journey and can share their learning with you at home. All reading books match directly to the sounds that children know so that they quickly become independent readers.

Sight Reading

Alongside Read Write Inc. Phonics teaching we have designed an innovative approach to help pupils learn sight vocabulary. These are 300 commonly used words (some can be phonetically decoded, others cannot) that every child should recognise on sight by the time they are 6 years old. Meet the RebelINs….

REBEL

To help our pupils learn to recognise all 300 words we have created 10 characters called RebelINs. (‘Rebels’ because the don’t use phonics to read them!)

There are 10 characters and 60 collectable cards. To gain each card the pupil will need to sight read 5 different words. Each new card gives a RebelIN a new power!

Reb

Pupils collect all 60 cards to POWER UP their reading:

POWER UP YOUR READING… POWER UP THE REBELINS!
