Transition

Transition between all year groups is a high priority at Sedgefield Hardwick Primary School. Transition places social and emotional demands on pupils which we aim to reduce through carefully planned transitional arrangements.

Before Arriving at Sedgefield Hardwick

All parents and pupils are invited to an Induction Meeting initially. At the meeting, parents and pupils meet the staff team, receive key information and view the school/nursery. Following the meeting, parents and pupils leave with an information pack and a short video from the staff team which can be viewed at any time in preparation of starting school/nursery. Lastly, just before each pupil begins school/nursery, they will undertake up to three short induction sessions before starting on a full-time basis.

Primary School Transitions

At Sedgefield Hardwick we place great value on supporting pupils with transition in every year group. We aid transition from one year group to the next by providing teachers with allocated time to pass on information about each child to the next class teacher, as well hosting Transition Days, where pupils visit their new classes and engage in exciting activities to make the visit memorable. Through this process, staff work hard to develop positive relationships with each pupil and build enthusiasm for the next year in school.

Transition to Secondary School

At the end of their primary school career pupils transfer to a local secondary school. A large majority of our pupils transfer to Sedgefield Community College, a mixed comprehensive (11-16), which is also part of the Laidlaw Schools Trust. As you would expect, our school has particularly close links with Sedgefield Community College and each Year 6 pupil has the opportunity to visit the school in the summer term. When visiting, each pupil works with the teachers while meeting new friends and becoming accustomed to their new surroundings. Prior to the visit, a Transition Officer from the Community College visits the pupils in Year 6 on a number of occasions to provide reassurance and clarity.
