Character Curriculum
Vision
Our school takes responsibility for the character development of our young people as a central element of our role in education. Character education includes all explicit (taught) and implicit (caught) educational activities that help our pupils develop positive personal strengths called virtues. Character education is more than just a subject. It is about helping our pupils grasp what is ethically important in situations and how to act for the right reasons. Character education at Sedgefield Hardwick will have a legacy far beyond the school, impacting young people as friends, neighbours, parents, team members and employees, benefitting both the individuals themselves, their wider communities and broader society.
Aims
To equip learners with a balance of strong, desirable virtues that enable them to:
- have excellent internal standards;
- learn and grow;
- add value to their community;
- perform highly;
through both an enabling school culture and systematic teaching.
Principles
Learning across the curriculum follows our Instil, Inspire, Innovate philosophy which has been derived from the theory of learning by Oliver Wendell-Holmes
There are intellects, one-storey intellects, two-storey and three-storey with intellects with skylights…
Our Virtues
A virtue is a quality, trait or habit which shapes and guides emotions and actions in a mid-point that is relative to us discoverable through experience and reflections.
When we acquire a balance of virtues we are able to deliberate and assume much more control over how we act in the circumstances we face. Virtues can be caught and taught.
